Healthy food in Dubai: where to eat well.

Written by Gillian McKeith

Dubai will sell you a gold-leaf pudding before it sells you a decent plate of vegetables, and for years that was the whole problem. It has changed. There is now a proper handful of kitchens here doing organic, plant-forward cooking without the theatre, and I could eat well in this city.

Comptoir 102 on Beach Road has been the clean-eating address in Dubai since it opened, organic where it can be, raw vegetables, pulses and seeds treated with respect, and a courtyard worth sitting in. SEVA Table was the first fully plant-based, gluten-free, cane-sugar-free cafe in the Middle East and it has not drifted. Wild & The Moon at Alserkal is entirely plant-based with no additives anywhere near it, and the juices are the real thing rather than fruit sugar in a bottle.

For dinner, LOWE at Koa Canvas cooks over fire, puts vegetables at the centre and throws almost nothing away. Teible by the creek works with UAE farms and will name them if you ask, which in a city that imports nearly everything takes real effort. BOCA in DIFC has done more on sourcing than most kitchens in the Gulf and cooks Mediterranean food, so the vegetables and olive oil do the work. And Avatara in Voco Hotel is the one to book if you want proof that vegetarian cooking can hold a Michelin star, a long tasting menu of Indian vegetables, no meat anywhere near it.

If you are looking for healthy restaurants in Dubai, judge them the same way: purity, wholesomeness, organic where the chef can manage it, and an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, pulses, grains and seeds. Nobody on this page has paid a penny to be recommended, and the day that changes, this guide stops being worth reading.

Eating well in Dubai: your questions

Where can I get healthy food in Dubai?
Comptoir 102 on Jumeirah Beach Road for organic bowls and juice, Wild & The Moon at Alserkal Avenue for entirely plant-based food, and SEVA Table if you want plant-based without gluten or cane sugar. For dinner, LOWE or Teible.
What is the best vegan restaurant in Dubai?
SEVA Table and Wild & The Moon are both fully plant-based and both mean it. SEVA for a long, quiet meal in the garden, Wild & The Moon for something quick and clean in the middle of the day.
Where can I eat organic in Dubai?
Comptoir 102 is organic wherever the kitchen can source it, Wild & The Moon uses organic produce across the menu, and Teible buys from UAE farms rather than the air freight catalogue.
Is there fine dining in Dubai for people who eat well?
Yes. LOWE at Koa Canvas cooks over fire with vegetables at the centre and wastes almost nothing, and BOCA in DIFC has taken sustainable sourcing further than most restaurants in the Gulf.
Do I need to be vegan to use this Dubai guide?
No. The guide is plant-forward, not plant-only. Some of these kitchens are entirely plant-based, others simply cook vegetables as though they matter. Meat eaters will eat perfectly well at LOWE, Teible and BOCA.
Can a Dubai restaurant pay to appear in this guide?
No. Every listing is chosen on sourcing, freshness and what actually arrives on the plate. There is no advertising on these pages and no restaurant has ever bought its way in.
