Gillian McKeith's guide to healthy restaurants in Newcastle.

Written by Gillian McKeith

Newcastle has been quietly good at this for far longer than the rest of the country gives it credit for, and I would like that corrected. Super Natural on Grainger Street has been feeding this city vegetarian and vegan food since 1976, which is a decade before most people had heard the word.

The Ship Inn in Ouseburn runs a fully vegan kitchen inside a proper pub, curries and Sunday lunch included, and it does not feel like a compromise. Sunshine Restaurant on Gallowgate cooks Eritrean and Ethiopian food, which is naturally built on lentils, pulses and greens and served on injera rather than wheat. The Tree Rooms bakes entirely plant based, so if you want cake you can have cake.

My test does not soften for the north east: purity, wholesomeness, organic where the kitchen can manage it, plenty of fresh vegetables, pulses, grains and seeds. No listing here was bought and none is for sale.

Eating well in Newcastle: your questions

What is the best vegetarian restaurant in Newcastle?
Super Natural on Grainger Street. It has specialised in vegetarian and vegan food since 1976 and it is right in the middle of town, so there is no excuse not to try it.
Is there a fully vegan pub in Newcastle?
The Ship Inn on Stepney Bank in Ouseburn. The whole kitchen is vegan, including the Sunday lunch, and it is still a pub rather than a health cafe in disguise.
Where can I find plant based Ethiopian food in Newcastle?
Sunshine Restaurant on Gallowgate. Eritrean and Ethiopian cooking leans on lentils, split peas and greens, and it is served on injera, so a good deal of it suits people avoiding wheat as well.
Do I need to be vegan to eat at these places?
No. Plant-forward, not plant-only. Some of these kitchens are entirely vegan, others simply cook vegetables with respect. Come as you are.
Does anyone pay to appear in this Newcastle guide?
Never. I pick each one myself on sourcing, freshness and what actually reaches the plate. The moment a listing could be bought, the guide would be worthless.

I'm Gillian McKeith: television presenter, creator of the global hit show You Are What You Eat, writer, nutritionist, and the editor behind this guide. Every Newcastle entry here is chosen and written by me. I judge kitchens on the things that actually matter: real ingredients, honest sourcing, vegetables cooked with care, and food you feel better for eating.

Nothing on this page is a paid placement. Restaurants cannot buy a recommendation, and any listing marked as sponsored is labelled as such. If a kitchen slips, it comes out of the guide.
