Healthy restaurants in Portland: where to eat well.

Written by Gillian McKeith

Portland makes healthy eating easier than most American cities, but I still want more than a fashionable bowl and a wellness slogan. I look for proper vegetables, pulses, grains, seeds, careful sourcing and food with enough flavour to bring you back.

Take it neighbourhood by neighbourhood. SE Belmont has Farm Spirit for the full plant-based tasting-menu experience. Division gives you Feral and its farm produce, foraged ingredients and natural wine. On Hawthorne, Lilla does comforting vegan Italian, while Foster Road has Mirisata for Sri Lankan rice and curry and Off the Griddle for breakfast and brunch. Jade Rabbit brings handmade vegan dim sum to the inner eastside.

For a healthy lunch in Portland, I would start with Mirisata, Lilla or Jade Rabbit. For vegan brunch, Off the Griddle is the clear answer. If gluten is the concern, Mirisata's fully vegan, gluten-free and soy-free menu removes the usual negotiation.

Each entry is here because I rate the food, not the marketing budget. Nobody buys a place on this page.

Eating well in Portland: your questions

What are the best healthy restaurants in Portland?
I would start with Farm Spirit for a special tasting menu, Feral for farm produce and natural wine, Mirisata for Sri Lankan rice and curry, and Jade Rabbit for handmade dim sum. Lilla and Off the Griddle cover the comforting end without abandoning the plants.
Where can I get a healthy lunch in Portland?
Mirisata on SE 50th is my strongest lunch answer when you want vegetables, spice and a meal with substance. Lilla on Hawthorne and Jade Rabbit on NE Broadway are also good daytime choices, depending on opening hours.
What is the best vegan restaurant in Portland?
Farm Spirit for a plant-based tasting-menu experience, or Mirisata when you want Sri Lankan rice and curry done without animal products. Portland has enough good vegan cooking to choose by mood rather than settle for one token menu.
Where can I get vegan brunch in Portland?
Off the Griddle on SE Foster has been serving vegan breakfast and brunch since 2010.
Which Portland restaurants have gluten-free food?
Mirisata is the clearest choice because its Sri Lankan menu is fully vegan, gluten-free and soy-free. Tell any restaurant about an allergy before ordering, because a dietary label is not a substitute for a direct conversation with the kitchen.
Where should I eat in southeast Portland?
Farm Spirit is on SE Belmont, Feral is on Division, Lilla is on Hawthorne, and Mirisata and Off the Griddle sit farther south around SE 50th and Foster Road. That gives you tasting menus, Italian, Sri Lankan cooking and brunch without crossing the river.
Is there vegan dim sum in Portland?
Yes. Jade Rabbit is a worker-owned, family-friendly restaurant serving vegan dim sum and pan-Asian dishes.
Do I need to be vegan to use this Portland guide?
No. The guide is plant-forward, not plant-only. The point is that the vegetables, grains and pulses are worth ordering.
Do Portland restaurants pay for a listing?
They do not. I choose every listing on sourcing, freshness and how much genuine produce reaches the plate.

Nothing on this page is a paid placement. Restaurants cannot buy a recommendation, and any listing marked as sponsored is labelled as such. If a kitchen slips, it comes out of the guide.
