Gillian McKeith's guide to healthy restaurants in Philadelphia.

Written by Gillian McKeith

Philadelphia has a reputation built on the cheesesteak, and it does the city a disservice. This is one of the strongest plant based eating cities in America, and it has been for years, quietly getting on with it while other places talked.

Vedge in Center City treats vegetables with the seriousness a steakhouse reserves for beef, and it remains the benchmark. Charlie was a sinner. does candlelit plant based small plates. HipCityVeg took plant based fast food and made it ordinary in the best sense, Bar Bombon cooks all vegan Puerto Rican food with real flavour, and Miss Rachel's Pantry in South Philly sits you at a communal farmhouse table and feeds you properly.

My standard does not shift for a city with a famous sandwich: purity, wholesomeness, organic where the kitchen can manage it, and an abundance of fresh produce, pulses, grains and seeds. No restaurant has paid for its place here.

Eating well in Philadelphia: your questions

What is the best vegan restaurant in Philadelphia?
Vedge. Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby cook vegetables with more technique than most chefs bring to meat, and the room is a pleasure to sit in.
Where can I eat plant based quickly in Philadelphia?
HipCityVeg. Burgers, cheesesteaks and shakes without a scrap of animal product, made fast and made well.
Is there vegan brunch in Philadelphia?
Bar Bombon in Rittenhouse does a strong all vegan Puerto Rican brunch, and Miss Rachel's Pantry in South Philly is the one to book when you want to be looked after.
Do I need to be vegan to use this Philadelphia guide?
No. The guide is plant-forward, not plant-only. Eat how you like, but eat the vegetables while you are here.
Can a Philadelphia restaurant buy a listing?
No. I pick each one myself, and a Gillian's Pick has never been for sale and never will be.

Written by Gillian McKeith

I'm Gillian McKeith: television presenter, creator of the global hit show You Are What You Eat, writer, nutritionist, and the editor behind this guide. Every Philadelphia entry here is chosen and written by me. I judge kitchens on the things that actually matter: real ingredients, honest sourcing, vegetables cooked with care, and food you feel better for eating.

Nothing on this page is a paid placement. Restaurants cannot buy a recommendation, and any listing marked as sponsored is labelled as such. If a kitchen slips, it comes out of the guide.
