Gillian McKeith's guide to healthy restaurants in Cardiff.

Written by Gillian McKeith

Wales grows extraordinary food and for years Cardiff did very little with it. That has changed, and I am pleased to say the change came from small independents rather than anybody clever with a marketing budget.

Luna's Vegan Corner on Wellfield Road is entirely plant based and cooks comfort food without leaning on grease to do the work. Plant.Eat.Licious, in the basement of the Chapel Arts Centre, is fully vegan and the sort of small city centre kitchen I always want to find. Mowgli Street Food on Church Street keeps a proper vegan menu of lentils, chickpeas and vegetables rather than one apologetic dish at the bottom of the page.

The standard is the same in Cardiff as everywhere else I write about: purity, wholesomeness, organic where the chef can manage it, and real quantities of fresh vegetables, pulses, grains and seeds. Not one of these restaurants has paid me a penny to be here.

Eating well in Cardiff: your questions

What is the best vegan restaurant in Cardiff?
Luna's Vegan Corner on Wellfield Road. It is fully plant based and it feeds you properly. If you are in the middle of town, Plant.Eat.Licious under the Chapel Arts Centre is the one I would walk to.
Where can I eat healthily in Cardiff city centre?
Plant.Eat.Licious on Windsor Place and Mowgli Street Food on Church Street are both a short walk from the castle, and both give you vegetables, pulses and grains rather than a plate of beige.
Is there good vegan Indian food in Cardiff?
Mowgli on Church Street runs a dedicated vegan menu. Indian home cooking has been built on lentils and chickpeas for centuries, which is precisely the sort of eating I have recommended for thirty years.
Do I need to be vegan to use this Cardiff guide?
No. The guide is plant-forward, not plant-only. Some kitchens here are entirely vegan, others simply treat vegetables as the reason you came. Eat as you please.
Do Cardiff restaurants pay to be listed?
They do not, and they cannot. I choose every listing myself on sourcing, freshness and how much genuine produce reaches the plate. That independence is the whole point of the guide.

About the author

Written by Gillian McKeith

I'm Gillian McKeith: television presenter, creator of the global hit show You Are What You Eat, writer, nutritionist, and the editor behind this guide. Every Cardiff entry here is chosen and written by me. I judge kitchens on the things that actually matter: real ingredients, honest sourcing, vegetables cooked with care, and food you feel better for eating.

Nothing on this page is a paid placement. Restaurants cannot buy a recommendation, and any listing marked as sponsored is labelled as such. If a kitchen slips, it comes out of the guide.
