Gillian McKeith's guide to healthy restaurants in Liverpool.
Written by Gillian McKeith
Liverpool has a stubborn independent streak and it shows in the food. The best plant cooking here belongs to small owners who have been doing it for years without waiting for permission from anyone.
The Egg Cafe near Lime Street is the veteran, vegetarian and vegan home cooking up a staircase, and it has been feeding this city wholefood since long before it was fashionable. The Vibe Cafe is family run and fully plant based. Down The Hatch and Woo Tan Scran does plant based comfort food and Asian dishes with no meat anywhere near them. Mowgli began on Bold Street, and its vegan Indian menu is built on the lentils and chickpeas I have been recommending for three decades.
The judgement is mine alone: purity, wholesomeness, organic where the chef can manage it, and an abundance of fresh vegetables, pulses, grains and seeds. Nobody has paid to be on this page.

Eating well in Liverpool: your questions
- What is the best vegetarian restaurant in Liverpool?
- The Egg Cafe on Newington. It is vegetarian and vegan home cooking, served in a bohemian room up a flight of stairs, and it has outlasted a great many trendier places for good reason.
- Where can I eat vegan on Bold Street?
- Mowgli started on Bold Street and keeps a dedicated vegan Indian menu, and The Vibe Cafe nearby is entirely plant based. Both are easy to reach on foot from the city centre.
- Is there vegan comfort food in Liverpool?
- Down The Hatch and Woo Tan Scran. It is fully plant based and it does not pretend to be a salad bar. I would rather people eat this than a takeaway that leaves them heavy for two days.
- Do I have to be vegan to use this guide?
- No. Plant-forward, not plant-only. I am interested in how a kitchen sources and how it treats vegetables, not in policing what anybody eats.
- How are Liverpool restaurants chosen?
- By me, on the standard I have used for thirty years: purity, wholesomeness, organic sourcing where possible and real quantities of fresh produce. No payment, no exceptions.

Nothing on this page is a paid placement. Restaurants cannot buy a recommendation, and any listing marked as sponsored is labelled as such. If a kitchen slips, it comes out of the guide.
