Gillian McKeith's guide to healthy restaurants in Boston.

Written by Gillian McKeith

Boston is a serious, studious sort of city and its plant cooking has grown up the same way, quietly and with a lot of thought behind it. A good deal of it started on university campuses, which tells you something about who was demanding better food first.

Clover Food Lab began at MIT and still changes the menu with the seasons, which is exactly what I want to see. Life Alive Organic Cafe does warm organic grain bowls across Boston and Cambridge. Veggie Galaxy in Central Square is an all vegetarian diner with a vegan bakery counter, True Bistro in Somerville is the fully vegan dining room to book for an occasion, and Whole Heart Provisions builds bowls on roasted vegetables and grains rather than on sauce alone.

I judge every one of them on the same terms: purity, wholesomeness, organic wherever the chef can manage it, and plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, pulses, grains and seeds. Not a penny changes hands for a place on this page.

Eating well in Boston: your questions

What is the best vegan restaurant in Boston?
True Bistro in Somerville for a full sit down dinner, Whole Heart Provisions when you want feeding quickly and well. Both treat vegetables as the reason you came.
Where can I get a healthy lunch in Boston or Cambridge?
Life Alive Organic Cafe for a warm organic grain bowl, or Clover Food Lab for a seasonal vegetarian menu at fast food speed. Neither leaves you hunting for a second lunch an hour later.
Is there an all vegetarian diner in Boston?
Veggie Galaxy in Central Square. All day breakfast, a proper vegan bakery counter and none of the greasy aftermath a diner usually leaves you with.
Do I need to be vegetarian to use this Boston guide?
Not remotely. The guide is plant-forward, not plant-only. Some kitchens here are entirely meat free, others simply cook vegetables better than most.
Do Boston restaurants pay to appear here?
They do not, and offering would count against them. Every listing is my own choice on sourcing and freshness.

Written by Gillian McKeith

I'm Gillian McKeith: television presenter, creator of the global hit show You Are What You Eat, writer, nutritionist, and the editor behind this guide. Every Boston entry here is chosen and written by me. I judge kitchens on the things that actually matter: real ingredients, honest sourcing, vegetables cooked with care, and food you feel better for eating.

Nothing on this page is a paid placement. Restaurants cannot buy a recommendation, and any listing marked as sponsored is labelled as such. If a kitchen slips, it comes out of the guide.
