Healthy restaurants in Leeds.

Written by Gillian McKeith

Leeds does not fuss about its vegetables, it just cooks them well. That is a compliment. I would rather eat pulses done properly in a converted mill than a limp salad served with ceremony, and this city understands the difference.

Bundobust on Mill Hill is where I would send anyone first. It began here, the whole menu is vegetarian, a great deal of it vegan, and Gujarati cooking is built on lentils, chickpeas and spice rather than dairy and cream. TADA does the best vegan bento I have eaten outside London, which is not a sentence I expected to write about a sushi counter in Leeds. Mowgli on Boar Lane keeps a proper vegan menu instead of an apologetic footnote. The Mustard Pot in Chapel Allerton proves a pub can feed you meat free without reaching for the fryer, and Fleur handles vegan and vegetarian menus with more care than most of its neighbours.

My test does not change for the north: purity, wholesomeness, organic wherever the kitchen can manage it, and plenty of fresh vegetables, pulses, grains and seeds on the plate. Not one of these restaurants paid to be here. They cannot, and they never will.

Eating well in Leeds: your questions

What is the best vegan restaurant in Leeds?
Bundobust on Mill Hill. The entire menu is vegetarian and much of it is vegan, and Gujarati cooking gives you lentils, chickpeas and greens rather than cheese and cream. If you want something quieter, TADA does an outstanding vegan bento.
Where can I eat healthily in Leeds city centre?
Stay central and you are fine. Bundobust is on Mill Hill, Mowgli is on Boar Lane and Fleur sits in the middle of town, all walkable from the station and all keeping genuine plant menus rather than one token dish.
Is there good vegetarian Indian food in Leeds?
Yes, and it is the strongest thing the city has. Bundobust is entirely meat free and Mowgli runs a separate vegan menu. Indian home cooking has been plant based for centuries, long before anyone in Britain made a fashion of it.
Anywhere good outside the city centre?
The Mustard Pot on Stainbeck Road in Chapel Allerton. It is a pub, and it feeds you properly without meat, which is rarer than it should be. Worth the short trip north.
Do these Leeds restaurants pay to be listed?
No. I pick them on purity, wholesomeness, organic sourcing where the chef can manage it, and how much fresh vegetable, pulse, grain and seed actually reaches the plate. Nobody buys a place on this page.

Nothing on this page is a paid placement. Restaurants cannot buy a recommendation, and any listing marked as sponsored is labelled as such. If a kitchen slips, it comes out of the guide.
