Europe

Healthy restaurants in Europe.

Written by Gillian McKeith

Europe has been feeding people vegetables for centuries; the good kitchens just never needed a marketing department to tell them so. 65 restaurants across 21 cities made my list because they source properly, cook cleanly and put plants where they belong: at the centre of the plate.

Start with Amsterdam, Berlin or Paris. The test is the same in every country: purity, wholesomeness, organic where the chef can manage it, and an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, pulses, grains and seeds.

Nobody on this page has paid me a penny to be recommended.

Eating well in Europe, answered.

Which European city is best for plant-forward dining?
Berlin is arguably the most developed, but Amsterdam has been doing this since the 1980s and does it without fuss. I have also found excellent kitchens in Paris, Barcelona and Rome. The real answer depends on which city you are visiting; each guide lists the specific places I trust.
Is it easy to eat healthily while travelling in Europe?
It is easier than it used to be, but you still need to know where to go. Tourist areas are full of places that use the word healthy while serving the same processed food. My guides point you to the kitchens that actually buy produce and cook it with care.
Do these places have to be fully vegan?
No. The guide is plant-forward, not plant-only. I include restaurants that serve meat or fish if they also cook vegetables, grains and pulses with genuine ambition. What counts is what reaches the plate.
Do European restaurants pay to be listed?
They do not. I choose every entry myself on sourcing, freshness and whether the food leaves you feeling better, not worse. Restaurants can claim their listing to keep the details straight, and that changes nothing about whether I include them.
My European city is not here yet. Can I suggest a restaurant?
Please do. I am always interested in places outside the obvious capitals that are cooking real food from real ingredients. Use the recommend form and I will look at it properly.

I'm Gillian McKeith: television presenter, creator of the global hit show You Are What You Eat, writer, nutritionist, and the editor behind this guide. Every Europe entry here is chosen and written by me. I judge kitchens on the things that actually matter: real ingredients, honest sourcing, vegetables cooked with care, and food you feel better for eating.

Nothing on this page is a paid placement. Restaurants cannot buy a recommendation, and any listing marked as sponsored is labelled as such. If a kitchen slips, it comes out of the guide.
